Impacts

Climate change results in multiple severe impacts:

  • Rising temperatures and heat waves.

  • Melting ice causing rising sea levels.

  • Ocean acidification harming marine life.

  • More frequent extreme weather events (hurricanes, forest fires).

  • Altered ecosystems leading to biodiversity loss.

  • Negative effects on agriculture and the food supply chain.

  • Heat-related health issues and economic losses.

  • Threats to water resources and shortages.

  • Increased forest fires and vulnerabilities in plant and animal species.

  • Release of greenhouse gases from melting permafrost.

  • Rise in cases of allergies and asthma.

  • Infrastructure damage (roads, buildings).

  • Our focus here is placed on six key impacts, signaling the need for societal change to prevent irreversible consequences.

1 /

Extreme weather events and rising temperatures

Rising global temperatures due to climate change are resulting in more frequent and intense heat waves, posing a threat to human health and ecosystems. At the same time, climate change is increasing the incidence and severity of extreme weather events, such as hurricanes, floods, heat waves and snowstorms. These phenomena can cause significant damage to infrastructure, crops and natural habitats.

2 /

Sea level rise

Sea level rise is a direct consequence of rising temperatures, leading to the melting of glaciers and ice caps. This sea level rise can have serious consequences, including coastal flooding that jeopardizes both human populations and marine biodiversity.

3 /

Biodiversity loss

Biodiversity loss is an outcome of climate change, as it disrupts natural habitats and leads to the extinction of numerous animal and plant species. Living organisms, whether they are animals or plants, struggle to adapt to the rapid changes in their environment, resulting in a decrease in biological diversity.

4 /

Ecosystem changes

Climate change influences terrestrial and marine ecosystems by altering species' life rhythms, disrupting animal migration patterns and modifying the availability of food resources. These disturbances have the potential to generate significant ecological imbalances.

5 /

Food Security Threat

Food security is threatened by climatic fluctuations, notably droughts and floods, which have the potential to lower agricultural productivity by reducing crop yields. This can lead to food deficits, higher food costs, and jeopardize food security for many populations across the globe.

6 /

Risk to Human Health

Climate change can have serious consequences for human health by increasing the incidence of heat-related illnesses, promoting the spread of vector-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue, and exacerbating respiratory problems due to air pollution associated with extreme weather events.
